With the largest number of registered carriers (approximately 14,000) of any state in the United States (second only to California), the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Bureau of Audits has their hands full when auditing the records of their truck driving taxpayers. And since February of 1997, they have relied heavily on Prophesy's Mileage & Routing software program to aid them in the audit process.
The popular choice of Pennsylvania taxpayers drove the decision to make Prophesy Mileage & Routing software the gold standard for the state. "The Prophesy program was chosen for our department because it was one of the most popular brands in the trucking industry", said Steve Allen, Director of the Liquid Fuel Division. "Many of our taxpayers were already using it, and we wanted to keep things simple. We wanted to avoid a situation where we would be faced with comparing the output of software."
Prior to the implementation of Prophesy Mileage & Routing, the department had relied upon tracking taxpayers in the state of Pennsylvania manually (the IFTA agreement had yet to be passed). "At the time we used a map wheel to measure the distance from point to point…everything was done completely manually," said Allen. "At this stage, with the expanded requirements that we face, it would be an unbearable task to map a trip across the U.S. manually. Of course using the software, that's not a concern."
Due to the versatile route tracking options available within the software, the department has multiple tools at their disposal for checking taxpayer accuracy. "Prophesy is especially useful for checking against a filed report when the taxpayer has less-than-accurate records," said Allen. "We are able to track the trip via fuel and truck stops through the software's truck stop lookup feature". Having concrete stops to check against helps the department ensure accuracy.
Using Prophesy Mileage & Routing also helps the department keep tabs on taxpayers who are using the latest technology. "The software is also especially useful when taxpayers are using a Global Positioning System that provides only latitude and longitude points. We are able to enter those points into Prophesy for quick verification. This particular feature is very handy during the audit process," added Allen.
Prophesy is proud to serve the needs of the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Bureau of Audits. "We are pleased that our software has been adopted as the gold standard in Pennsylvania," says William Ashburn, Prophesy Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We strive to put out a product that our users can rely upon without question for their trucking needs. When the state agencies that audit our users utilize the very same solutions, is a welcome vote of confidence in the quality of our software."
It is important to note that Pennsylvania taxpayers are required to maintain their own reports and records and that the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Bureau of Audits uses Prophesy Mileage & Routing as an auditing tool.
Prophesy Mileage & Routing is the easy-to-use commercial-grade mileage and routing system that users will have up and running in less than five minutes. Prophesy is ideal for automating complex tasks such as looking up mileage and quoting rates over the phone; optimizing multiple stop trips; and routing to and from cities, intersections, truck stops, and zip codes.
Prophesy is a comprehensive system that can route to over 1,000,000 points in North America and can calculate both industry-standard rating and practical miles. The program also integrates with Prophesy's dispatch and accounting, fuel tax reporting, log auditing, and fuel purchase optimization applications.
